A local's guide
The best beaches in Sri Lanka
Golden bays, beginner surf, whale-watching shores and barefoot-luxury sands - coast by coast, season by season, from the people who plan beach-led trips every day.
The one rule
Right beach, right season
Sri Lanka's two monsoons mean the best coast flips through the year. Get this right and you'll always land on a sunny beach.
South & west coast - December to April
The classic season: Weligama's beginner surf bay, Mirissa's palm-lined crescent and whale watching, Ahangama's boutique reef breaks, and the quiet wide sands of Tangalle. Calm seas, sunny days, easy beach-hopping.
East coast - May to September
When the south turns wet, the east shines: Arugam Bay's world-class points, and the calm, shallow bays of Trincomalee and Passikudah. Fewer crowds, warm dry days, superb surf.

Beach questions
Which is the best beach in Sri Lanka?
There's no single answer - it depends on the season and what you want. For beginner surf: Weligama. For a postcard palm bay: Mirissa. For boutique style: Ahangama. For world-class surf: Arugam Bay (in season).
Which coast has the best beaches?
Both, at different times. The south and west coasts are best December–April; the east coast is best May–September. Time your trip to the right coast and you'll always find sunshine.
Are Sri Lanka's beaches swimmable year-round?
Somewhere, yes - but not everywhere at once. Monsoon seas on the off-season coast can be rough with strong currents, which is why we always plan beach time around the season.
Which beaches are best for families?
Calm, shallow bays work best: Weligama on the south coast in season, and Passikudah on the east coast in summer are both family favourites.
