About Ahangama
Ahangama has quietly become the south coast's most stylish stretch - a string of reef breaks, design-led hotels, specialty coffee and a slower, more grown-up feel than the busier bays nearby. It's a favourite for longer, settle-in stays.
Ten years ago Ahangama was a strip of palms between Weligama and the Koggala lake. Today it's the coast's creative quarter: architect-designed hotels behind the dunes, cafés roasting their own beans, yoga shalas in the paddies - yet the trains still rattle along the coastal line and the stilt fishermen still climb their poles at dawn.
The surf is a big part of the pull. Kabalana's 'The Rock' is the south coast's best-known A-frame, and a chain of reef breaks runs east and west of it, mostly suited to improvers and up. Mornings belong to the water; afternoons to pool loungers and long lunches.
Inland, Koggala Lake spreads out behind the town - boat trips island-hop past cinnamon growers and a temple isle - and Handunugoda Tea Estate, famous for its 'virgin white tea', sits in the low hills just behind. It adds up to the most complete base on the coast for travellers who want style without scene.

Can beginners surf in Ahangama?
There are a couple of forgiving inside sections, but most breaks are shallow reef. Beginners usually take lessons in Weligama's bay and graduate to Ahangama's reefs later in the trip.
