About Nuwara Eliya
At nearly 1,900 metres, Nuwara Eliya is the highest town on the island - a curiosity of red post boxes, rose gardens and Tudor-style hotels set in a sea of tea. It's the heart of Ceylon tea country and the gateway to Horton Plains and World's End.
The British built Nuwara Eliya as a hill-station escape from the lowland heat, and the town never quite let the era go: there's a golf course from 1889, a racecourse, lake boathouses, and hotels where log fires and high tea are still daily rituals. Mornings are crisp enough for a jumper - a genuine novelty in Sri Lanka.
This is also the crown of Ceylon tea. The surrounding slopes grow some of the world's finest high-elevation tea, and estate visits here are the real thing: walk the rows with pluckers, watch leaves wither and roll in a century-old factory, then taste the difference altitude makes.
Before dawn, jeeps leave for Horton Plains National Park - a windswept plateau of cloud forest and grassland where the world simply stops at World's End, an 880-metre sheer drop off the edge of the highlands. Come back for boating on Gregory Lake, strawberries and cream, and an evening by the fire.

Is Nuwara Eliya worth visiting as well as Ella?
Yes, they're different: Ella is young, walkable and view-driven; Nuwara Eliya is high tea, grand hotels and the best tea estates. Many routes do a night in each, linked by the prettiest train leg.
How cold does it get?
Daytimes are pleasant (around 18–22°C) but nights can drop toward 5–10°C - bring proper layers, especially December to February.
