About Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is the heart of Sri Lanka's east-coast surf scene - a single sandy street of surf houses, cafés and hammocks, with world-class point breaks a short tuk-tuk ride away. It comes alive from May to September, exactly when the south coast turns wet.
Arugam Bay sits on the island's remote south-east corner, a long drive from anywhere and better for it. What began as a fishing village with one legendary wave has grown into a barefoot little surf town, but the rhythm hasn't changed: dawn patrol, long breakfasts, a nap in the heat, an evening session, dinner with sand between your toes.
The season is everything here. From May to September the east coast is dry, the points light up and the town buzzes; from October the swell fades, most places wind down and the action swings back to the south-west coast. We plan east-coast trips tightly around that window.
It isn't only surf. The lagoons behind the beach hide crocodiles and wild elephants, peacocks call from the scrub, and Kumana National Park - one of the island's quietest - is under an hour away. Few places mix waves and wilderness like this.
