About Negombo
Twenty minutes from the airport, Negombo is where most Sri Lanka trips take their first breath - a working fishing town with a long western beach, canal-side churches and the best crab curry of your holiday, before the island proper begins.
Negombo earns its place on an itinerary through honesty rather than glamour: this is a real Sri Lankan fishing town that happens to have a wide, sunset-facing beach and the country's international airport on its doorstep. Landing late or flying out early, it beats a Colombo hotel corridor every time.
Mornings belong to the lellama - the open-air fish market where the night's catch is auctioned, argued over and laid out to dry in glittering silver rows, while oruvas (outrigger sailboats) tack home across the lagoon. It's one of the island's great free spectacles, and photographers lose hours here.
The town's other signature is water: the old Dutch canal runs through town, once floating cinnamon to the coast, now plied by small boats past churches so numerous the town is nicknamed 'Little Rome'. And the lagoon behind it produces Sri Lanka's most celebrated crab - order it curried, with a stack of napkins.
