About Weligama
Weligama's wide, gentle bay is where half of Sri Lanka seems to learn to surf. It's an easy, welcoming base on the south coast - a long beach, surf schools by the dozen, everything from 5-star clifftop resorts to surf camps, and Mirissa, Ahangama and Galle all within a short drive.
The name means 'sandy village', and that's still the essence of it: a two-kilometre horseshoe of soft sand and forgiving waves, with fishing boats at one end, surf schools along the middle and Taprobane - a tiny private island topped by a 1920s villa - floating just offshore.
Weligama's real gift is convenience. It sits at the centre of the south coast's best stretch, so whale watching in Mirissa, the cafés and reefs of Ahangama, the stilt fishermen at Koggala and the ramparts of Galle Fort are all within thirty minutes of your hotel pool.
It also hosts some of the coast's most polished hotels, including big-name 5-star resorts on the clifftops above the bay - which makes it one of the few surf towns where you can pair morning whitewater lessons with a genuinely luxurious base.
