About Trincomalee
Trincomalee pairs one of the world's great natural harbours with the island's calmest, clearest seas. North of town, Uppuveli and Nilaveli unroll in miles of white sand - at their sparkling best from May to September, when the south coast turns wet.
'Trinco' has been prized for millennia - its deep-water harbour drew Chola kings, Portuguese fleets and the British Navy in turn. Above the bay, on Swami Rock, the golden gopuram of Koneswaram Temple stands where a great Shiva shrine has stood for over a thousand years, with sheer cliffs and blue water below.
The beaches begin just north. Uppuveli is the friendly village strip; Nilaveli, twenty minutes on, is the show-stopper - a vast ribbon of pale sand meeting genuinely turquoise shallows. Offshore, Pigeon Island National Park protects a coral reef where blacktip reef sharks and turtles cruise within snorkelling depth.
The sea here is the calmest in the country during its season, which also makes Trinco a serious whale-watching base: sperm whales and blue whales pass through the deep canyon off the harbour between roughly May and September. Add hot springs, fort ramparts wandered by deer, and seafood shacks on the sand, and the east coast case makes itself.
