About Adam's Peak
Adam's Peak - Sri Pada to Sri Lankans - is the island's holy mountain: a perfect cone bearing a footprint-shaped shrine venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike. The night climb to its summit for sunrise is Sri Lanka's greatest shared experience.
For over a thousand years, pilgrims have climbed this mountain by lamplight. The trail from Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) rises roughly 5,500 steps through tea, cloud forest and open ridge, lit end-to-end during the season by a ribbon of lights that seems to hang in the black sky. You start around 2am with flask-carrying grandmothers and barefoot monks, and summit as the east pales.
The sunrise is only half the reward. As the sun clears the horizon, the mountain throws its own shadow - a vast, impossibly sharp triangle - across the cloud sea to the west, holding for a few minutes before dissolving. Bells ring for each completed pilgrimage, the shrine receives its offerings, and the descent unwinds through waking tea country with the whole hill world at your feet.
Season matters: from the December poya to Vesak in May, the route is lit, staffed with tea stalls, and alive with pilgrims - this is when to go. Off-season, the mountain turns wet, leech-y and unlit, for experienced hikers only. Base yourself in Nallathanniya the night before; the Hatton-area tea bungalows make a superb before-or-after stay.

Nallathanniya's simple guest houses put you at the trailhead for the 2am start - basic but warm, and perfect for the purpose. The real treat is pairing the climb with a night or two in the Hatton area's tea-estate bungalows: planters' houses with log fires, lake views and cooked breakfasts that taste extraordinary after 11,000 steps.

How hard is the Adam's Peak climb?
It's a long stair-climb rather than a technical hike: around 5,500 steps up and the same down. Anyone reasonably active can do it at a steady pace with breaks - the tea stalls en route help.
When is the pilgrimage season?
From the December full moon to Vesak in May. The trail is lit through the night, stalls sell tea and roti, and the mountain has its full pilgrim atmosphere. December–February gives the clearest dawns.
Can I climb outside the season?
The mountain doesn't close, but the lights go off, stalls shut and the weather turns wet and slippery. We only recommend off-season climbs for experienced hikers with a local guide and good gear.
