About Mirissa
Mirissa is the south coast's postcard beach - a curving palm-lined bay with a rocky headland, a scattering of sunset bars, and the island's best blue-whale watching just offshore. It's compact, pretty and made for slow days.
Mirissa earns its fame twice over. On land it's the beach everyone pictures: golden sand curving between two headlands, palms leaning over the water, and Coconut Tree Hill - a palm-crowded bluff above the eastern end - starring in half the photographs ever taken of Sri Lanka.
Offshore, the continental shelf drops away unusually close to land, which is why the seas here host blue whales - the largest animals that have ever lived - along with sperm whales, spinner dolphins and the occasional orca. Between November and April, morning boats give you a better chance of a blue-whale sighting than almost anywhere on earth.
Evenings are the third act: the western end of the bay fills with candlelit tables and beach swings, seafood grills come out, and the sunsets do the rest. It's livelier than Ahangama, calmer than Unawatuna - an easy place to settle for a few days.
