About Tissamaharama
Tissamaharama - 'Tissa' - is the lakeside town where Yala safaris start. But it's more than a staging post: a 2,000-year-old royal city with great white dagobas, a birdlife-crowded tank, and the sacred multi-faith city of Kataragama twenty minutes up the road.
At 4.30am, Tissa is a town of headlights and flasks as the jeeps stream out towards Yala's gates - leopard country lies 30–40 minutes east, and staying here buys you first place in the queue when the park opens. Bundala's flamingo lagoons, Lunugamvehera's elephants and even Udawalawe are all within striking distance, making Tissa the south-east's natural safari base.
Between drives, the town rewards a slow loop. It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Ruhuna, and its skyline is still set by brilliant-white stupas over two thousand years old. Tissa Wewa, the royal-era reservoir, fills each evening with egrets, pelicans and fruit bats streaming out over water the colour of brass.
Twenty minutes north sits Kataragama, one of Asia's most compelling sacred sites - a jungle shrine complex holy to Buddhists, Hindus and the indigenous Vedda alike, where evening puja is all drums, incense, and firelight. Few safari-goers make time for it; those who do rarely forget it.

Position: the park gates are half an hour away, so you're inside at first light when leopards move. The town also has the widest spread of good-value stays around the park.
Yala or Bundala - can I do both?
Easily, and we often recommend it: Yala at dawn for leopard and big game, Bundala in the late afternoon for flamingos and waders. They showcase completely different sides of the dry zone.
Is Kataragama worth the detour?
Yes - it's twenty minutes away and unlike anywhere else on the island. Go for the evening puja, dress modestly, and let the drums and incense do the rest.
