About Haputale
Haputale sits on a knife-edge ridge at 1,400 metres, where the hill country suddenly drops away and - on a clear morning - you can see all the way to the south coast. It has Ella's scenery without Ella's crowds, and the finest tea-country viewpoint on the island.
The town clings to a mountain pass, and its geography is the attraction: south of the ridge the land falls thousands of feet to the dry plains, so sunrise here can serve up a cloud sea with Udawalawe's reservoirs glinting beyond it. Sir Thomas Lipton chose these hills for his empire, and took visitors up to the lookout that still bears his name to show them why.
Lipton's Seat is the classic outing: a dawn tuk-tuk (or a glorious two-hour walk) up through the Dambatenne estate's tea rows to the viewpoint, then down past pluckers at work to tour the 1890 Dambatenne factory Lipton built. It's the most complete tea experience in Sri Lanka - plantation, people, process and a cup at the end.
Around it spreads walking country: the eerie cloud-forest of Thangamale sanctuary, the Idalgashinna rail stretch where the track rides the ridgeline, and Adisham - a Benedictine monastery in a Tudor-style planter's mansion. Ella's buzz is 40 minutes east by the world's prettiest train ride; Haputale is where you sleep well and wake to the view.

Haputale or Ella - which should I base in?
Ella for cafés, nightlife and the famous hikes; Haputale for bigger views, working tea estates and quiet. They're 40 minutes apart by train, so many of our routes sleep in one and day-trip the other.
How do I get to Lipton's Seat?
Tuk-tuks run from town up through Dambatenne (about 45 minutes); the energetic walk the last 7 km through the tea. Leave by 5.30am - the view is usually gone behind cloud by 9.
Is the train ride worth it from Haputale?
Yes - the Haputale–Ella section is one of the line's best stretches, and boarding here means you actually get a seat before the Ella crowds. Ride it one way and have your driver meet you.
