About Habarana

Habarana is the junction town the Cultural Triangle runs through - twenty minutes from Sigiriya, between Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, with Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura all within easy reach. Base here and the ancient world plus the elephant gatherings sit on your doorstep.

Every route through the Cultural Triangle seems to pass Habarana's one junction, and that's exactly its value. Within an hour's spoke lie Sigiriya and Pidurangala, the Dambulla cave temples, medieval Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks - so a well-placed lodge here saves hours of doubling back and lets you take each site at dawn, before the heat and the crowds.

The wildlife is serious. Minneriya and Kaudulla share a floating population of several hundred elephants that moves between the parks with the water: The Gathering at Minneriya (roughly July–October) is the largest regular assembly of wild Asian elephants on earth, and Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park carry the show through the rest of the year. Your driver picks the right park for that week - it changes.

Habarana also does rural Sri Lanka beautifully. The Hiriwadunna village walk crosses a working tank by catamaran to a farmhouse lunch cooked over wood fires; birdlife crowds the reservoirs at dusk; and the lodges themselves - some of the island's best jungle and tank-side hotels - make staying put a pleasure in its own right.

Where to stay in Habarana

Habarana punches far above its size for hotels: grand tank-side lodges, 5-star jungle resorts with lake-view pools, and characterful eco-camps hidden in the scrub. It's the Cultural Triangle's most comfortable base - we usually anchor three or four nights here and day-trip the whole ancient world from one unpacked suitcase.

Good to know

Habarana questions

Why stay in Habarana rather than Sigiriya or Dambulla?

Position and hotels. Habarana sits at the junction of every Cultural Triangle road, so Sigiriya, the caves, Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks are all short hops - and its lodge scene is the best in the Triangle.

When can I see The Gathering?

Roughly July to October at Minneriya, peaking August–September as the water recedes. Outside those months the herds shift to Kaudulla and Hurulu - we always book the park the elephants are actually in that week.

How many nights should I spend?

Three nights covers Sigiriya, one ancient city and a safari without rushing; four adds Polonnaruwa or a second park run. It's the trip's most efficient base, so err on the generous side.
